Sarawak 25 Katis Rubber Coupon Banknote 1941 CU This is a SCARCE HIGH GRADE Banknote from Sarawak. This Note was issued by the Government of Sarawak for 25 Katis of Dry Rubber in 1941. This Banknote Currency was throughout Sarawak and Southeast Asia from the end of WWI (1922) through the beginning of WWII (1942) . They were denominated in and backed by hard commodity, units of " dry rubber ". They freely circulated and were accepted as Currency in the market place similar to a circulating " futures contract or option " It was reported that a single Katis was worth over 0 in the open market. They were issued by the British and Dutch Government following WWI to support the disastrous drop in rubber prices which threatened the economies of several Southeast Asia countries. They were issued in Limited Numbers and reflected actual rubber exports which were under quota. This particular Note was issued for 25 Katis which reflected 16.5 pounds of rubber. The Note was printed by the Survey Dept of F.M.S. (Federated Malaya States) in 1942. With the beginning of WWII, rubber prices escalated and the notes were no longer used. In addition, many of these places were invaded and became a War Zone in order to control the rubber reserves, necessary for the military effort. The Note is Uniface and has a watermark showing the outline of the Map of Malaya. These Notes are Catalogued in the Early IBNS Catalogue on Malaya States.
