ITEM DESCRIPTION:
Here is a Beautiful & Rare Antique circa Turn-of-the-20th Century (c1899-1901) White’s Pottery, Utica, NY Stoneware & Cobalt Blue Salt Glaze Beer Stein/Mug of a 'Buffalo / Bison', more than likely made for the 1901 Pan American Exposition as a 'Commemorative Souvenir'.
We currently have a 2nd similar White’s Pottery Stein/Mug listed from the 1901 Pan American Exposition so please have a look.
The pottery company name does not appear stamped on the bottom, but is absolutely from White’s Pottery, Utica, NY, who were in operation from 1899-1907, and there is a taped sticker on the bottom bearing their name.
Brief history of the White Pottery company below.
The front of the Mug features an embossed relief cobalt blue glazed Buffalo/Bison standing on a bluff, and the back side of the Mug features the embossed relief cobalt blue scene of three men drinking merrily around a barrel, and the rest of the Mug features the old-world semi-circle repeated design over the entire background. Similar to the other antique 1899 White’s Pottery Mug we have listed from the 1901 Pan American Expo, these stoneware mugs were highly touted back in 1901 in the
Utica Daily Press
newspaper as being one of the most unique & attractive of the Pan Am souvenirs and were made-to-order by the dealers from the White Pottery of Utica who did various styles of these mugs and cups, and this Mug was more than likely made as one of the ‘made-to-order’ souvenirs that various dealers sold back at the 1901 Pan American Exposition (from: fultonhistory, online digitized newspaper article,
Utica Daily Press
, “About the Pan-American: Some Sights to be Seen There”, Saturday Morning, June 1, 1901). Some of these antique stoneware steins/mugs came with a pewter flip-top lid, but ours does not feature one. The Mug is in VeryGood Rare+ condition for its antique age. The size is 4-1/8” high x 3.25” diameter wide (at base-not including handle) and is 2-13/16” wide at mouth (outside diameter). No restoration has been done at all to the piece. There are a few (original-to-the-piece) small firing cracks (looks like pottery heat shrinkage) in the inside base (bottom of mug) which do not go through to the outside of the piece, and there are also a few other (original-to-the-piece) small firing cracks on either side of the top & bottom of the handle where it meets the mug itself where it looks like the potter didn’t smooth out the seams well enough. But are completely stable and was sold like that back in the day (it is not from use of wear). There is one tiny grinding chip on the bottom edge (near bottom of handle) which doesn’t even really show when the mug is sitting normally. There is normal crazing on the inside of the mug from when it was originally fired and its subsequent cooling, and barely noticeable normal crazing on the outside—simply beautiful!
Whites Utica Pottery History:
Noah White began making pottery for several local firms in Utica, New York, circa 1834, In 1839 he bought out one of these companies, the Addington Pottery, and began making stoneware with the mark “N. WHITE” with the help of his son Nicholas A. White. Another son, William, joined the pottery in 1843; both were made partners in 1849 when the firm became “N. WHITE AND SONS”. William White sold out in 1856 and moved to Utica, Illinois, and the firm’s mark changed to “N. WHITE AND SON”.
In spite of the rapid changes in company ownership – or perhaps because of it – the marks “WHITES UTICA” OR “WHITE’S UTICA” were used from the 1850′s to the 1870′s. In 1863 Noah’s grandson William N. White joined the pottery and name changed to Noah White, Son and Company. Two years later Noah died and Nicholas assumed control of the works, changing the name to “N. A. WHITE AND COMPANY”. This name was modified slightly in 1867 to “N. A. WHITE AND SON” when his son became a partner.
From 1876 to 1882 the firm’s mark became “WHITES, UTICA, N.Y.” In 1882 Nicholas’s younger son Charles N. White joined the pottery and the mark became “N.A. WHITE AND SON, UTICA, N.Y.” The company used the name “CENTRAL NEW YORK POTTERY” from 1890 to 1899, and then “WHITES POTTERY INC.” until the pottery stopped making stoneware in 1907 (From: internetantiquegazette).

***IMPORTANT NOTE*** Customs charges/fees & duty taxes are based on the final value amount of the item(s) that we are required by U.S. law to declare on Customs Forms before shipping the item. Under U.S. law we are unable to mark a smaller amount or to declare the item a gift, sample, or anything other than merchandise prints/paintings etc, so PLEASE DO NOT ASK. Most items will be shipped rolled in a Heavy-Duty Tube to save on shipping costs. Some may be shipped flat/hardpacked at our discretion.

EMAILING US:
eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) to contact us with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it.
COLLECTORS & DEALERS:
Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!!
Thank you from the Staff at Meibohm Fine Arts, GOOD LUCK & HAPPY BIDDING!!!
